From Perth to Walpole - enjoy the diversity of the Harvest Highway
Focus on the journey, not the destination ...
joy is found not in finishing an activity, but in doing it
This quote, from American author Greg Anderson, sums up the delights of the journey you will encounter along the Harvest Highway and Byways. All too often as we set off on our journey, our focus is on the destination, and the journey is seen as something to be endured as opposed to enjoyed.
The Harvest Highway is ideal for a more relaxed and pleasant meander towards your destination, making the trip a part of your holiday.
So where and what is the Harvest Highway? Click on the town to find more.
The Harvest Highway is based on the South Western Highway: From Armadale right through to Walpole and including the byways - wonderful places such as Jarrahdale, Dwellingup, Collie, Boyup Brook, Nannup, Pemberton and Northcliffe - just off the beaten track, and well worth the exploration!
Call in to the numerous fruit and vege stalls and collect some fresh produce.
Not only will the price please you, but also the taste and texture of this farm fresh produce will bring back memories of a bygone era.
Need to stretch your legs?
Why not take a stroll along the well maintained walk trails. The trails, built by the local communities, often focus on a theme and will help you discover the history and heritage of these small towns. Or you can find that well-hidden patch of wildflowers in the spring or find some scenic spots that you might have missed.
Browsing the country stores with lots of interesting homewares and giftwares that you never see in the city is another diversion. Many artists have forsaken the busy city life to relocate in rural regions, and the various art and craft galleries located in the hinterland allow you to admire the artworks in peace and to interact with the artisan, or watch him/her at work.
And, you may just find that elusive piece that will just fit in the empty space at home and also provide you with a unique souvenir of your Harvest Highway holiday.
Take the opportunity to replenish the wine cellar by stopping off at numerous wineries situated along and adjacent to the Harvest Highway. These vineyards are usually owner-operated and offer wine enthusiasts the opportunity to talk to winemakers and sample the region's fine wines.
The Harvest Highway is well signposted to help you find all these delights, or, you can call into the local visitor centre, where the friendly staff, with a wealth of knowledge, are happy to help you find what you are looking for.
So, pack up the car, the kids and the maps, and set out on a "Journey of Discovery" along the Harvest Highway.
