Boyanup
The small township of Boyanup is situated right on the Harvest Highway and is the epitome of a ‘small country town’. Situated in the middle of a busy farming area, Boyanup also serves nearby Bunbury as a ”dormitory suburb”, with the lucky residents having the best of both worlds, enjoying city amenities and country lifestyle.
Boyanup is home to the fabulous Boyanup and Districts Farmers Markets. The bell rings at 8 am on the fourth Sunday of each month., to signal the beginning of trading. The markets provide a wonderful opportunity to buy farm fresh produce straight from the producer. Generally the fruit and vegetables are picked the day before and the freshness is unbeatable.
And whilst the fruit and veges are really important, the markets also offer more….like milk-fed pork, tasty value added produce such as jams, sauces, preserves, pickles, locally produced cheeses made from cows’ and sheeps’ milk, hydroponic lettuce, fruit leather, eggs, wheat gypsum and heaps more.
The markets are not only a shopping experience (your ankles will not be attacked by a wayward shopping trolley here!!) but are a great place to catch up with friends. Call in – you won’t regret it!!! The market bell rings again at 12 noon to signal the close of trade.
Boyanup is one of the country towns with sale yards, where auctions of beef cattle are held on a regular basis. It is well worth a visit to see this part of the chain that brings your steak a bit closer to your plate.
The Preston River meanders through Boyanup and the local community has developed some interesting walk trails that allow you to enjoy the delights of the river, whilst ensuring that the environment is protected.
Boyanup is also home to the Boyanup Heritage Museum. Unfortunately, at this time, the museum is closed for maintenance work, but the railway rolling stock can still be seen from the road or from Fettlers Park, a public space devoted to those hardy men and women who worked on the railways in the early days.
Boyanup also offers a great range of eating opportunities from takeaways and the Aussie ‘pie and chips’ type meals through to top quality pub meals and fine dining.
