Nestled in the midst of green forests, Dwellingup is the town that has it all. As you come into the town after driving through the lush surroundings, you have the sense of a pioneer, stumbling upon a special secret…
The timber surroundings are reflected in many of the buildings and homes of Dwellingup and the world famous Forest Heritage Centre further reinforces this town’s unbreakable link with the forests.
But there’s more to Dwellingup than just trees - here you can have a go at taming the waters of the Upper Murray River as it makes its way down to the ocean. The Bibbulmun Track and the Munda Biddi Cycle Trail both pass through Dwellingup, so those of you who are feeling energetic can engage in a brisk bush walk or jump on a bike and feel the breeze in your hair as you navigate the Munda Biddi.
So we’ve covered forests and adventure, and then there is food. Dwellingup boasts some very fine orchards in its region. And you can pick up some wonderfully fresh locally grown fruit at numerous farm gate stalls. And, there is an increasing number of wineries and cellar door sales in the area. Call in and try a drop - you won’t be sorry!!!
Dwellingup is in an area that has been associated with the timber industry from the early days. As you walk through the bush, there is evidence of old mills and railway tracks where the wood lines operated. In a reflection of this heritage , Dwellingup is still visited on a regular basis by the Hotham Valley Tourist Train and the Etmilyn Diner. Have a ride on one of these- the forest scenery is stunning, as is the food on the Etmilyn Diner.
Whilst heritage is always a part of every town, Dwellingup boasts a very special history starting with its significant role in the state’s timber industry. Few visitors to the town would believe that in 1961, this whole town was almost razed by bushfire. The town steadied and rebuilt itself and grew to be the lovely little place that it is today. Visitors interested in learning more about this history can drop into the visitor centre, where there is a display depicting the story.
There is no use rushing through Dwellingup,-apart from the attractions and activities outlined above, there is also an interesting collection of shops and little cafes that just invite you in to browse a while, or to sit and contemplate the special peace that epitomises Dwellingup.
There is a whole lot more to this surprising little town, and to find out, just call into the Dwellingup History and Visitor Centre, or give them a call on 9538 1108, or email dhvic@murray.wa.gov.au - the friendly staff will be sure to help you with your queries.
